The Central STEM Region is a network comprised of members from K-12 education, higher education, workforce development, business, economic development, and non-profit organizations in thirty-two counties in Central Pennsylvania addressing promotion and improvement of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) in the region.
Many organizations from colleges and universities to work-force development agencies and businesses have programs to promote STEM. However, there is very little coordination between efforts. Through this network approach, we are promoting collaboration, communication, and information sharing that hopefully will lead to a synergistic effect that hasn’t previously existed to improve momentum in STEM.
The efforts that the regional points of contact and network partners are leading in the Central PA STEM Region (which is
by far, the largest of the five PA STEM regions) will allow us to develop tools such as an economic gap analysis focusing on STEM, an asset map of STEM programs and facilities, and a communications plan that will lead to the development of strategies that are focused on the needs of the region and making connections with resources that are in place in order to maximize efficiency.
Our efforts in the PA STEM Initiative are focusing on ways to promote pathways that lead to careers that are relevant to industries in our region and state. We will also be working to support schools in programs such as the Department of Energy’s Real World Design Challenge and associated engineering design software training that will provide schools with free resources for incorporating STEM into their schools.
The vision of our long-term ten year plan is to ensure that industries in the Central Region are competitive in the global marketplace and that citizens in the Central Region have the skills necessary to work in the technologically-challenging occupations that companies demand.
